Terrell Suggs Focuses on Character and Pride During Trying
Season

Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs may be a lot of things, like a two-time
Pro Bowl pick (2004 and ’06). And he may be a Football
Digest All-Pro, which he was last season when he received
second-team honors.
But when it comes to prognostication, he comes up a bit
short.
“I’m not sure if we’ve reached our low point,” Suggs
said before the Ravens flew to Miami for a Dec. 16 game against the
winless Dolphins. “We’ve played some bad football, but I like to think
we can play better.
“There’s no doubt we’ve been hurt by injuries. But I
like to think there’s a lot of character and pride in our locker room.”
The character and pride of Suggs and his teammates were
to be severely tested over the last two games of the NFL season —
especially since the Ravens definitely reached their low point at Miami,
losing 22-16 in overtime to arguably the league’s worst team.
As a result, the Ravens lost their eighth game in a row
— just one season after going 13-3.
The implosion against Miami came after the Ravens were
hammered 44-20 by the Colts and after they found “creative” ways to drop
a 27-24 decision to the undefeated New England Patriots.
“We can’t hang our heads,” Suggs said. “Getting upset
with anybody on the team isn’t productive. It doesn’t help anything. But
it’s still hard to fathom what’s happened. You do have to wonder how we
might have done if we hadn’t had so many injuries.”
The Ravens have lost three Pro Bowl players to injury:
cornerback Chris McAlister, quarterback Steve McNair and defensive
tackle Trevor Pryce. Three other starters — tight end Todd Heap (who
graduated from ASU in 2001), offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden and
cornerback Samari Rolle — have missed a combined total of 22 games.
Through 14 games, Suggs had 73 tackles, including 44
solo stops and five sacks. And indications out of Baltimore are that the
Ravens want to begin negotiations for an extension because he has one
year left on his contract.
